59 human trafficking related crimes registered in Tajikistan in 1½ years

KHOROG, July 28, 2010, Asia-Plus  — A roundtable discussion on problems of trafficking in persons took place in Khorog, the capital of Gorno Badakhshan on July 27.

Organized by the Interagency Commission on Combating Trafficking in Persons, Faculty of Law at Tajik National University, and the International Organization for Migration’s (IOM) Mission in Tajikistan, the meeting is part of the project, Technical Assistance to the Government of Tajikistan on Combating Trafficking in Persons, implemented by the International Organization for Migration in Tajikistan under support of the U.S. Embassy’s International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Assistance Program.

Ms Gulchehra Ibrohimova of the IOM’s Mission in Tajikistan said the main objective of the event was in acquainting representatives from local authorities, law enforcement agencies, as well human rights organizations, youth and women’s organizations, and other local public associations with basic foundations of national and international laws, aspects of the fight against human trafficking, and specifications of transnational trafficking in persons.

The meeting participants also discussed practice of investigation into human trafficking related crimes.

It was noted that 59 human trafficking related crimes had been registered in Tajikistan over the past one ad half years.  57 cases related to buying and selling of minors, one case related to labor bondage and one case related to forced involvement in prostitution.

The meeting resulted in adoption of a number of proposals on improvement of a complex program for combating human trafficking in Tajikistan, designed for 2011-2015
