DUSHANBE, August 31, 2010, Asia-Plus — The National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) is expected to issue a 500-somoni banknote by the 19th anniversary of Tajikistan’s Independence, the source at Tajik central Bank said.

Founder of Tajik-Persian Classical Literature Abu Abdullo Roudaki will be featured on the obverse of the bill.

Besides, Tajik central bank will also issue 3- and 200-somoni banknotes.  One of founders of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic also Hero of Tajikistan Shirinsho Shotemur will be featured on the obverse of the 3-somoni banknote and Hero of Tajikistan Nusratullo Makhsum will be featured on the obverse of the 200-somoni banknote.

“The mentioned banknotes have already been printed and they will be demonstrated on Tajik national TV within the next few days,” the source said.

The objective of issuance of these banknotes is in improving the structure of the country’s monetary system, he added.

We will recall that Tajik national currency, the somoni, was introduced on October 30, 2000; it replaced the Tajikistani ruble, at the rate of 1 somoni=1000 rubles.  The somoni is subdivided into 100 diram.  The currency named after the farther of Tajik nation, Ismoil Somoni.

Banknotes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 somoni as well as coins in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 diram also 1, 3 and 5 somoni are currently in circulation in the country.
