DUSHANBE, February 19, 2011, Asia-Plus  — Resident of Khorog Faromouz Amonbekov, 27, has got a jail term of three years for beating Defense Ministry officer, but he relatives consider that the trial was held with numerous violations of law.

The GBAO regional court sentenced Farmouz to three years in prison on February 17.  The sentence followed his conviction on charges of illegally possessing weapons and beating military personnel.

In the meantime, Faromouz’s brother, Firouz Amonbekov told Asia-Plus Friday afternoon that the trial was held with numerous violations of law.  “Official charges against my brother were brought under the provisions of two articles of Tajikistan’s Penal Code: Article 329 – threatening law enforcement or military personnel and Article 195 (1) – illegally bearing, possessing, and acquiring weapons,” said Firouz Amonbekov, “In the meantime, the officer says he has no complaint against my brother because he did not sustain any serious injuries and Faromouz apologized to him.  Moreover, the officer even did not want trial over this case,” said Firouz Amonbekov, “He did not want to come to court but they compelled him to come.”

According to Firouz Amonbekov, there were no witnesses to the incident and the sentence is based only on testimony by Faromouz.  “Faromouz’s confession to beating the military personnel was obtained under duress,” Firouz Amonbekov said.

Asia-Plus’ reporter tried to get in touch with Shuhrat Roziqov, a judge from the GBAO regional court who took in the trial, by phone but failed.
