KHUJAND, March 17, 2011, Asia-Plus  — A year-old girl was killed and at least four other persons were injured in a fire that broke out in an apartment building in Khujand, the capital of Sughd province Thursday morning.

According to the Sughd firefighting department, they received call about the fire in neighborhood # 31 at around 11:00 am.  “Fire crews that arrived on scene managed to extinguish the fire in 10 minutes,” said the source, “Two persons who jumped off the third floor of the building sustained various injuries and were hospitalized.  Besides two dwellers living on the fourth floor who got carbon monoxide poisoning were also hospitalized.”

“A year-old girl that remained in the apartment enveloped in flames perished in the fire,” he added.

Though the cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the preliminary data, the fire was caused by the incorrect or careless use of a gas cylinder.
