DUSHANBE, April 13, 2011, Asia-Plus  — Members of Tajikistan’s lower chamber (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament have endorsed amendments to the country’s criminal punishment execution code.  The amendments provide for improvement of conditions for life sentence prisoners.

A sitting of the second session of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the fourth convocation, presided over by its head, Shukurjon Zuhurov, was held on April 13.

Presenting the bill requiring the mentioned amendments, Minister of Justice Bakhtiyor Khudoyorov noted that under the amendments made to the code the life sentence prisoners might purchase an unlimited amount of food products in stores located on the territory of the prison.

“The amendments also provide for short-term and long-term prison visits by relatives and improvement of sanitary and hygienic conditions of the prison for the life sentence inmates,” the minister added.

The Majlisi Namoyandagon speaker, for his part, noted that Tajikistan had to carry out a long and niggling work to bring its criminal punishment execution code into compliance with international standards.
