DUSHANBE, May 4, 2011, Asia-Plus — An enlarged two-day sub-regional workshop to discuss the process of collection of labor migration data is being held in Dushanbe.

The workshop that is being conducted within framework of the project, Regulating Labor Migration as an Instrument of Development and Regional Cooperation in Central Asia – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, is dedicated to optimize the process of formation of an efficient system for management of labor migration processes, the source at the International Labor Organization (ILO) Project Office in Tajikistan said.

According to him, this expert consultative event is being held under the aegis of the ILO and Tajikistan’s Migration Service in cooperation with the relevant government bodies and social partners as well as public associations and academic circles from the Central Asian region.

“The main objective of this regional dialogue is in deeply studying and discussing problems regarding formation of an adequate system for collection and exchange of migration data as well as in developing practical recommendations on optimization of this sphere,” the source said.

The workshop participants are also discussing opportunities of development of a single concerted approach to improvement of the system for collection and exchange of appropriate migration data in Central Asia on the basis of generally recognized international ILO standards and best practice.

The project, Regulating Labor Migration as an Instrument of Development and Regional Cooperation in Central Asia – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, is being implemented under financial support of the European Union.

The project’s overall objectives are in ensuring the development of a more comprehensive strategy for labor migration and more effective regulation of migration flows in Central Asia.

Specific objectives: To develop harmonized policies, legislation and administrative tools for the management of labor migration in order to assist migrant workers and their families and to ensure that both sending and receiving countries benefit to the maximum extent from migration by supporting the development of a more comprehensive labor migration strategy for the region, including more effective regulation of migration in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, building on participation and engagement of relevant stakeholders at the country and regional levels.
