DUSHANBE, June 2, 2011, Asia-Plus  — Dushanbe is reportedly going to mark World Environment Day in a big way.

By mayor’s decree different events will be held in the city on June 5 on the occasion of World Environment Day, Shavkat Saidov, a spokesman for the Dushanbe mayor’s office said.  According to him, the main events will take place outside the building of Philharmonic Society.

Besides, environmental actions on cleaning banks of rivers and lakes as well as scientific conference and roundtables will be conducted, the spokesman said.

World Environment Day (WED) is a day that stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and public action. It is on June 5.  It was the day that United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment took place on June 5–16, 1972.  It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972.  The first World Environment Day was on 1973.  World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme and is commemorated with an international exposition in the week of June 5.

This year”s WED theme is ”Forests: Nature at Your Service”, which highlights the crucial environmental, economic and social roles played by the world”s forests.
