DUSHANBE, November 17, 2011, Asia-Plus – On Tuesday November 15,  Mr. Hiroyuki Imahashi, Ambassador, Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe and Mr. Qodir Valiyev, Chairperson of Khovaling district signed a grant contract for “The Project for Improvement of Surgical Department and Maternity Department of Central Hospital in Khovaling District”.

According to Japan’s Embassy, the Grant for the project will be funded under the scheme of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) with the total amount of US$111,788.

The facility of the surgical department and the maternity department of the central hospital in Khovaling district has not been rehabilitated since the establishment in 1986.  The hospital currently cannot provide proper treatment in consequence of the crumbled walls, roofs and floors as well as the shortage of medical equipment.

The project covers rehabilitation of the whole building of the surgical department and the maternity department including renovation of the crumbled walls, roofs and floors.  Also, medical equipment such as ultrasound machine, artificial lung ventilation apparatus, and gastro fiberscope will be newly installed in both departments.  In addition, one hundred medical beds with bedside tables will be distributed to all departments of the hospital.

On the next day, Mr. Hiroyuki Imahashi and Mr. Abdujon Tavakkalov, Chairperson of Panj district signed a grant contract for “The Project for Rehabilitation of Children Infectious Department of Central Hospital in Panj District”.

The Government of Japan provides a sum of US$111,855 for the project under its Grant Assistance for the Grass–roots Human Security Projects (GGP).

Due to the damaged walls and ceilings, the building of the children infectious department of the central hospital in Panj district has been inappropriate for provision of medical service.  The lack of medical equipment and necessary furniture for the treatment of infectious diseases has made the hospital difficult to decrease infectious diseases among children.

The total rehabilitation of the children infectious department including renovation of windows and doors will be conducted through the project.  Moreover, several medical devices such as medical beds, dry heat cabinet and refrigerator will be provided to the hospital.

These health projects will enable the central hospitals to provide quality medical service to patients in Khovaling and Panj districts, Khatlon province.

Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) is provided to local governments, educational/ medical institutions and International NGOs in developing countries. GGP supports projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level.  Since 1996, GGP has extended more than US$ 20.6 million for 278 projects in Tajikistan.
