DUSHANBE, December 1, 2011, Asia-Plus – On Thursday December 1, Mr. Hiroyuki Imahashi, Ambassador, Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe and Mr. Abdukarim Hikmatov, Chairperson of Mastchoh district, Sughd province signed a grant contract for “Project for Rehabilitation of Secondary School No.17 in Obburdon Jamoat, Mastchoh District”.

According to Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe, the Government of Japan in the framework of Grant Assistance for the Grass–roots Human Security Projects (GGP) allocates US$111.844 for implementation of the project.

Out of four school buildings of secondary school No. 17 in Mastchoh district, the 4th building is especially in poor condition due to lack of renovation.  All windows and wooden doors are damaged heavily and walls and floors are rotten because of the high humidity in this area.  Moreover, the educational equipment of the 4th building has never been renewed since its establishment.

In cooperation with the local government of Mastchoh district, the government of Japan supports the rehabilitation of twelve classrooms, and archive storage as well as corridors in the 4th building of the school.  The rehabilitation work includes renovation of windows, doors, walls and floors of the school. Educational equipment such as 154 desk/chair sets and 12 blackboards will also be provided.  The newly rehabilitated school facility will ensure the better educational environment for more than 1,020 school students in Mastchoh district.

The Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) provides support to projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level.  The GGP is provided to local governments, NGOs, and educational and medical institutions in developing countries.  The GGP has extended more than US$ 20.8 million for 280 projects in Tajikistan since 1996.
