An official source at the Interior Ministry’s office in Sughd says 222 cases of suicide, including 73 suicide attempts, have been reported in the province over the first nine months of this year, which is 34 cases more than in the same period last year.

Men, including fourteen minors, have reportedly committed suicide in 118 cases and women, including twenty-six minors, have committed suicide in 104 cases.

The latest suicide case in Sughd was registered in the Dalyoni Bolo village, Asht district on October 8.  “A 29-year-old woman has been found hanged in a sheepfold.  No signs of violent death were found on her body; an investigation into the case is under way.

The listed causes of suicide were mental diseases (52), family problems (37), economic problems (6), and unspecified (127).

This year, criminal proceedings for driving to suicide have been instituted against ten persons in the province, the source said.

It is to be noted that the authorities in northern Tajikistan set up a special group to try to stem an increase in the number of suicides in the area.
