DUSHANBE, December 3, 2014, Asia-Plus — Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Aslov yesterday received Ms. Hulan Tsedev, Chief of the Europe and Central Asia Section at the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), Ms. Elizabeth da Costa, OHCHR Deputy Regional Representative for Central Asia, and Ms. Natalya Seytmuratova, Human Rights Officer at OHCHR Regional Office for Central Asia.

Mr. Alexander Zuev, the UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Tajikistan, and OHCHR representatives in Tajikistan also attended the meeting. 

According to the Tajik MFA information department, the sides discussed issues related to mechanisms of monitoring and fulfillment by Tajikistan of its human rights obligations.

Human rights challenges in Europe and Central Asia reportedly cover a wide range of issues, including the enjoyment of economic and social rights, particularly in the context of the financial crisis, as well as challenges in implementing the rights of persons with disabilities, despite relevant commitments by governments in the region.  Multiple forms of discrimination; the rights of migrants and in particular the situation of unaccompanied children; the situation of the Roma; gender inequality, violence against women and trafficking; torture and ill-treatment; inadequate detention conditions; administration of justice and independence of the judiciary; freedom of the media; and the situation of human rights defenders continue to draw the attention of the Office and the human rights mechanisms.

Established on by the UN General Assembly on December 20, 1993, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is a United Nations agency that works to promote and protect the human rights that are guaranteed under international law and stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948.
