DUSHANBE, January 7, 2015, Asia-Plus — The Islamic Revival Party (IRP) says local authorities have put obstacles in organization of its pre-election conferences for nomination of candidates for participation in the 2015 parliamentary elections.

“Thus, local authorities of the districts of Rasht, Rumi and Jomi today refused our applications for premises for holding conferences of the IRP’s organizations in these districts,” Mahmoudjon Fayzrahmon, a spokesman for the IRP, told Asia-Plus Wednesday afternoon.

“On December 31, the IRP’s organization in the Jomi district applied to the district head for premises to hold the pre-election conference on January 7 but the application was refused,” said Fayzrahmon.  “Therefore, the IRP’s organization in Jomi was forced to hold the pre-election conference in the house of one of its activists.  The IRP’s organizations in Rumi and Rasht have faced the similar problem.”

Founded in October 1990, the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan is the only Islamic party registered in CIS Central Asia.  The IRP was registered on December 4, 1991.  It was banned by the Supreme Court in June 1993 and legalized in August 1999.  Its official newspaper is

Najot

(Salvation).  According to some source, the IRP now has some 50,000 members.  Women reportedly constitute more than 51 percent of the Islamic Revival Party members.
