DUSHANBE, February 16, 2015, Asia-Plus — A high-ranking police officer from the northern province of Sughd has been detained on suspicion of drug pushing.

An operation carried out by drug control officers in the northern city of Isfara on February 14 reportedly led to the arrest of unemployed resident of the Ghafourov Township.

According to the Drug Control Agency (DCA) press center, eight packages of narcotic drug that tested positive to heroin weighing nearly 8 kilograms were confiscated from him.

“The detainee said the heroin belongs to his acquaintance called Furqat,” said Khoushnoud Rahmatulloyev, a spokesman for the DCA.  “Furqat proved to be police officer having military rank of Major.”

The preliminary investigation has reportedly established that the corrupt police officer intended to use unemployed people for transportation of heroin outside the country.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted under the provisions of Article 200 (4) of Tajikistan’s Penal Code – large-scale drug trafficking; an investigation is under way.
