Floods cause damages to Isfara and Jabborrasoulov districts in Sughd

DUSHANBE, June 15, 2015, Asia-Plus — Rapid Emergency Assessment and Coordination Team (REACT) reports that an avalanche that occurred in Kyrgyz territory near the Karavshin River on June 7 caused increase in water level in the Isfara River in the Isfara district of the Tajik northern province of Sughd.

According to information from the Committee on Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CES), one house near the river was totally damaged in Chorkuh Jamoat of Isfara District. Furthermore, power transmission, four plots of land and two bridges in Vorukh Jamoat of Isfara District were damaged.  No human casualties were reported.

On June 8, 2015, a strong winds and torrential rains in Kyrgyzstan caused a mudflow in three jamoats of the Jabborrasoulov district in Sughd namely Gulkhona, Somoniyon and Gulakandoz.  Tajikistan’s Red Crescent Society (RCS) and CES’s office in Sughd report that significant damage was caused to households and social infrastructure.  As a result, 548 houses were reportedly flooded, from which one house was totally and 15 houses were partially damaged.  Also the warehouses and kitchen gardens were flooded.  Water supply system and sewerage were also washed by the mudflow.  Moreover, storage of two schools, 6.7 km of road, 340 ha of land and 45 ton of harvest were damaged according to the preliminary assessment.  70 families were temporarily evacuated to the safe place in the village of Madaniyat of Gulkhona jamoat.  In the first hours of the disaster, TCS’s branch in the Jabborrasoulov district provided the affected population in Madaniyat village of Gulkhona jamoat and in Zarafshon village of Somoniyon jamoat with safe drinking water (15 tons of water).  However there is a need of providing the affected population with more drinking water, chloric tablet, food and non-food items, psychological aid, and informational leaflets and booklets with recommendations on preventing the infection diseases.

The Disaster Management Partnership in Tajikistan – Rapid Emergency Assessment and Coordination Team (REACT) was established in 2001 to promote the sharing of information, logistics and other resources between partners active in the disaster management sector, including the Committee of Emergency Situations and the Government of Tajikistan. The group that involves over 50 state, local and international organizations and entities meets regularly to coordinate and share experiences on issues related to various areas of disaster management, including preparedness, response, mitigation and capacity building activities with national bodies. During emergency situations the partnership works closely together, coordinating response and assistance.
