DUSHANBE, June 15, 2015, Asia-Plus – Tajik President Emomali Rahmon on June 15 extended his condolences to his Georgian counterpart Giorgi Margvelashvili over the devastating flooding that left human casualties, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

Tajik president also asked to convey his deepest condolences to families and relatives of the flooding victims.

Torrential rain late Saturday and early Sunday poured down on Tbilisi, a hilly city that is along a river valley. The Tbilisi Zoo lies along the banks of the Vere River, which overflowed and caught the animals in their pens and cages.  The flooding reportedly killed at least twelve people.  June 15 was declared a day of mourning in Georgia for those who died in the devastating flooding in Tbilisi.

The flooding began when heavy rains caused the River Vere – normally little more than a stream – to burst its banks.  Thousands of people have been left without water and electricity while others have had to be airlifted to safety.

Georgian officials said the flooding in the Georgian capital was the worst natural disaster in recent memory.
