DUSHANBE, April 27, 2016, Asia-Plus – Tajik veteran politician Himatullo Nasriddinov proposes to nominate Tajik President Emomali Rahmon for the Nobel Peace Prize.

According to him, Rahmon has done a lot for preserving peace in the country and put forward many initiatives on water problems, restoration of peace and stability in Afghanistan, preservation of peace and good-neighborliness in the region, and integration processes within the post-Soviet area.

“In that distant Fall of 1992, when the historic 16th session of the Supreme Council of Tajikistan was being held in Khujand, I noticed in my capacity as a deputy that many experienced politicians did not at that time want to take the leadership of the country into their hands,” said Nasriddinov.  “Rahmon agreed to take on this heavy burden of the country’s leadership, saying at the time: ‘I will bring Tajikistan peace and reconciliation.’”

“No one can dispute Rahmon’s services in raising Tajikistan’s image on international arena, socioeconomic development of the country, solving problems of international and regional policy,” Nasriddinov noted.

It is Hikmatullo Nasriddinov who proposed in September 2015 to erect a statue in honor of Emomali Rahmon.  Just for safe measure, he also proposed bestowing Rahmon with the honorific of Hero of Tajikistan, for the second time.

Local admirers, like Nasriddinov, hail Emomali Rahmon for his role in leading Tajikistan out of the brutal civil war of the 1990s.

President Emomali Rahmon on December 25 himself signed off on the law “On Founder of Peace and Accord – Leader of the Nation,” which designated him “the Leader of the Nation.”

We will recall that Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) passed the law on December 9 and members of Tajikistan’s upper house (Majlisi Milli) unanimously voted to second the law on December 18.

The law officially designates Rahmon “the founder of peace and national unity of Tajikistan” and states that he cannot be prosecuted for anything he has done while in office.  The law also determines powers of the Leader and stipulates that he will be provided with transport, dwelling and social benefits after leaving the presidency.  Besides, the law gives Rahmon the right to appeal to the nation and participate in important government events and address them after leaving the presidency.  The law also provides for creating archives, library and museum of the leader of the nation.
