DUSHANBE, July 5, 2016, Asia-Plus — The University of Central Asia (UCA) is advancing construction of its three main campuses in Naryn, Kyrgyzstan; Khorog, Tajikistan; and Tekeli, Kazakhstan.
According to the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), UCA will complete Phase I of its main campus construction in Kyrgyzstan in 2016, when UCA will enroll its first class of undergraduate students at the residential campus. The campus includes a three-story academic building, housing a library, classrooms, laboratories, a dining hall and faculty housing, and two dormitory buildings. Previously constructed international standard sports facilities, including two tennis courts and a football pitch, already open to the public.
UCA’s campus site in Tajikistan is located in Khorog, 2,100 meters above sea level on land. In 2015, UCA formally secured a loan to advance construction. Alongside a $64.4 million commitment from AKDN, including $7.5 million from the Aga Khan Foundation, Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the United States Government’s development finance institution has extended $30 million to complete Phase I construction of its Khorog campus. To prepare the site for construction, UCA is clearing and crushing rock. The crushed and cleaned rock will be used for multiple purposes, including as base material for roads and buildings, manufacturing of concrete and general use in the construction of the Khorog campus. Once the rock clearing and crushing process is complete, UCA expects to proceed with detailed campus design and some site preparation works.
UCA’s main campus in Kazakhstan will be located in Tekeli in the Almaty region and is anticipated in 2019. To prepare the campus site for construction, UCA has undertaken extensive grading works. Design works are currently ongoing for the Tekeli campus access road, site drainage and further retaining wall design. UCA then expects to proceed with detailed campus design and some site preparation works.
