DUSHANBE, July 29, 2016, Asia-Plus – Torrential rain on July 28 caused a series of mudslides that damaged roads and bridges in the districts of Asht (Sughd province) and Rasht (Rasht Valley).

Ms. Umeda Yusupova, a spokeswoman for the Committee on Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CES) under the Government of Tajikistan, says mudslides have damaged a bridge and farmlands in the villages of Qalanak and Yaldumich in the Rasht district.

Mudslides have reportedly also damaged in several places the Hoit-Nazarailoq road in the Rasht district.

“In the Asht district, mudslides damaged two residential buildings, five cars, one teahouse and 10-15 kilometers of roads in the villages of Dahansoy and Punghoz. No injured was reported,” Ms. Yusupova said.

According to her, district commissions are currently working in the areas to mitigate the mudslides’ effects.

We will recall that heavy rains in May caused floods and mudslides that have damaged homes and led to the evacuation of hundreds of people across the country.

The floods damaged more than 1,000 homes in several villages in the Roudaki district.  Floods and mudslides were reported in several other districts across the country.

In early May, three people were killed by mudslides caused by heavy rains in the northern Sughd province.
