During a visit to the Spitamen district, President Emomali Rahmon called on residents of the northern Sughd province to be vigilant and have firm civil position.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, his call came during an address to a meeting of regional administrators in the administrative center of the Spitamen district on September 13.

Rahmon, in particular, noted that about 400 residents of Sughd province were members of various religious extremist groups.  “Thirty-six of them are residents of the Spitamen district,” the president said.

“To-date, dozens of residents of Sughd district have died abroad for others interest,” Emomali Rahmon added.

The head of state reportedly urged regional administrators, teachers and parents to take measures to prevent local youth from joining international terrorist groups.
