A 51-year-old national of Tajikistan has been arrested in the Russian city of Novosibirsk for allegedly trying to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group.

In a statement, the Federal Security Service (FSB)’s office for Novosibirsk oblast said: “Security officers arrested the 51-year-old Tajik national on suspicion of traveling to Syria via Istanbul to join ISIS.”

He reportedly bought ticket for the Novosibirsk-Moscow-Istanbul flight and was arrested while passing border control.        

Criminal proceedings have been instituted and an investigation is under way.
