The Tax Committee under the Government of Tajikistan has equated local independent attorneys with entrepreneurs.

Tajik independent attorneys will now pay tax from general income as individual entrepreneurs.

The resolution passed by the Tax Committee on this subject reportedly took effect on November 1, 2016.

Independent attorneys will now pay the simplified tax from general income at the rate of 6.0 percent.

Earlier, they had paid only the social insurance tax at the rate of 1.0 percent.

Attorneys will be registered with the Tax Committee on the basis of a license granted by the Ministry of Justice.

Parliament in November last year approved legislation obliging lawyers to renew their license with the Justice Ministry on a five-yearly basis.

The law also automatically denies a legal license to anybody with a criminal conviction.

Besides, persons dismissed from power-wielding and law enforcement agencies for corruption crimes or breach of oath are also prohibited from practicing law.

Stateless persons, persons who are not nationals of Tajikistan, and persons with dual citizenship are also prohibited from offering legal services in Tajikistan.

Persons who failed to pass attestation are also prohibited from practicing law.

Henceforth defense lawyers do not have the right to represent their relatives in court.
