Tajik schools students won one bronze and two silver medals at the 49th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO 2018) in Lisbon, Portugal, between July 21 and 28.  The IPhO competition consists of a theoretical and an experimental examination, each of five-hour duration.

Tajikistan was represented at IPHO 2018 by students from Tajik-Russian Lyceum “Hotam and PV” and Dushanbe Lyceum for Talented Children.

Daler Pirov (“Hotam and PV” Lyceum) and Sabina Abdurahmonova (Dushanbe Lyceum for Talented Children) won the silver medals and Farahmand Hasanov (“Hotam and PV” Lyceum) won the bronze medal.

In all, school students from ninety countries of the world participated in the 49th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO 2018) in Lisbon, a source at “Hotam and PV” Lyceum told Asia-Plus in an interview.

The 49th IPhO was organized by the Portuguese Physical Society, on behalf of the Portuguese Ministry of Education under support of the Government of Portugal as well as public and private partners.

The IPhO competition consists of a theoretical and an experimental examination, each of five-hour duration. This year, the theoretical examination had questions based on LIGO detection of gravitational waves, the ATLAS instrument at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the physics of blood flow in living tissues and growth of tumors.

The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is an annual competition in physics for secondary school students, aiming at promoting physics and the development of international contacts in physics education. It involves individual theoretical and experimental competitions in physics.  The IPhO 1st edition took place in Warsaw, Poland, in 1967, with 5 participating countries.  Since then, IPhO has grown to worldwide coverage involving more than 85 countries and 400 competitors.
