Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has congratulated his Uzbek counterpart Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Uzbekistan Independence, according to the Uzbek president’s official website.  

In his message of congratulations, Tajik leader, in particular, notes that Tajikistan attaches significance to its relations with Uzbekistan.

“Relations with Uzbekistan have always been and remain one of priorities of Tajikistan’s foreign policy,” reads the message.   

In 1991, the August coup in the capital of the USSR in Moscow failed.  Thanks to the initiative of the late President Islam Karimov August 31, 1991 was proclaimed the independence of Uzbekistan.  August 31, 1991, the Supreme Council of Uzbekistan adopted a resolution "On the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan" and the Law "On State Independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan".  Uzbek SSR was renamed the Republic of Uzbekistan.
