A report for 2018 released by Office of Tajikistan’s Ombudsman, in particular, says 307 prison inmates in Tajikistan suffer from HIV infection.  

4,600 prison inmates were tested for HIV in 2018 and 30 new cases of HIV were revealed among them bringing a total number of HIV-infected prison inmates in the country to 307, according to the report.  

Of those 307 HIV-infected prison inmates, 262 have reportedly been provided with antiretroviral therapy.  

Besides, 173 new cases of tuberculosis were registered in Tajikistan’s penitentiary institutions last year, the report says.  

The report notes that high mortality rate of infectious diseases remain the main problem facing Tajikistan’s penitentiary institutions. 

According to the statistical data from the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, 8,026 people live with HIV in Tajikistan.
