Tajikistan has launched the National Disaster Risk Management Project.

The project is being implemented by the Government of Tajikistan, represented by the Committee on Emergency Situations and Civil Defense, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The project launching ceremony was attended by the Emergencies Committee chief Rustam Nazarzoda and ADB Country Director for Tajikistan Pradeep Srivastava as well as heads and senior representatives of a number of international organizations active in Tajikistan, according to the Emergencies Committee press center.

The project was reportedly developed on the basis of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy for 2019-2030 and the Emergencies Committee Development Program for 2018-2022 and it consists of three components:

–           Wide introduction of the disaster risk management into government bodies;

–           Improvement of potential for management of disasters and minimization of losses;

–           Development of a roadmap for further investment and sustainable financing.

The implementation of the disaster risk management project also provides for assessment of vulnerability of dangerous places to various emergency situations, training and retraining of the Emergencies Committee, technical strengthening of the Emergencies Committee potential, monitoring of Lake Sarez, extension of an early warning system, improvement of logistics base and training of personnel of the Emergencies Committee Anti-Hail Service.

The National Disaster Risk Management Project and the National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy for 2019-2030d seek to integrate disaster risk reduction (DRR) into all development activities and to improve disaster preparedness and response.
