Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have reportedly reached an agreement on land swap near border.

Kyrgyz media reports say Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have swapped chunks of land within the framework of demarcation of the mutual border.

To-date, the sides have reportedly agreed on only 407 of 1,040 hectares being under discussion.

Citing a source in the administration of Osh region, Kloop.kg says Kyrgyzstan will relinquish an area in Aravan district that includes the Kerkidan reservoir.  However, residents of the Kyrgyz village of Kerkidan will have access to water flowing out of the reservoir.

In return, Kyrgyzstan will receive an equivalent parcel of land near its village of Gulbaar, in the Aravan district of Osh region.

Disputes over the reservoir water have caused tensions between residents of border areas and this process is expected to help avoid such border tensions.  The kind of borer tensions was seen earlier this week.  On September 10, clash broke out between Uzbek border guards and Kyrgyz locals near the village of Kerkidan following a burst of outrage over Uzbek operations to put a fence around the nearby reservoir.
