A 34-year-old resident of the northern city of Khujand, Firdavs Inomzoda, has been detained on suspicion of severely beating his young children, according to the Interior Ministry’s official website.

A video of the man beating his two children, a 7-year-old Ilhomjon and a 6-year-old Sumaya, has been sent to the Khujand police department by unknown person.

During the first interrogation, Inomzoda reportedly said that he had been beating the children in order to speed up divorce with their mother, who is currently working in Russia as labor migrant.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against Inomzoda under the provisions of Article 117 of Tajikistan’s Penal Code – cruel treatment or torture.  If convicted, he could face seven years in prison.

It is to be noted that Firdavs Inomzoda has a previous conviction for circulation of counterfeit bills.
