Special boxes will be installed in Dushanbe for collection of dead batteries, Bahodur Sheralizoda, the head of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan, told reporters in Dushanbe on February 1.

The first environmental action on collection the dead batteries has been organized by the Committee for Environmental Protection jointly with the Public Organization “Peshsaf.”

Special boxes for collection of dead batteries have been installed at the entrances to the shopping malls Avrang, Paikar and Dushanbe Mall.

According to Sheralizoda, it is just a part of a large-scale work improve the sanitary condition of the city and raise environmental awareness of the population.

He further noted that the dead batteries will be sent for recycling to a special enterprise in Hisor City.

Battery recycling is a recycling activity that aims to reduce the number of batteries being disposed as municipal solid waste.  Batteries contain a number of heavy metals and toxic chemicals and disposing of them by the same process as regular household waste has raised concerns over soil contamination and water pollution.
