The Dushanbe Police Directorate has reported detention of a young women from Khatlon’s Temurmalik district for damaging the automated teller machines (ATMs) in Dushanbe’s Shohmansour district.

A statement released by the Dushanbe Police Directorate says a 35-year-old woman from the Temurmalik district on May 18 damaged two ATMs of Dushanbe City Limited Liability Company (LLC) located in Dushanbe’s Shohmansour district, breaking their screens.  She reportedly damaged the ATMs due to lack of cash in them.

Meanwhile, video showing the woman damaging ATMs in Dushanbe has been in Tajik segment of Facebook for already more than five days.

Dushanbe police also noted that “complaints from citizens about cash shortage in ATMs have been published on social networks and in media recently.”

Meanwhile, representatives of Dushanbe City LLC claim that ATMs damaged by the women had cash in them.

The problem of cash shortage in ATMs has been reported in Tajikistan since April 10.  Many ATMs have reportedly gone dry in the country.

Banks have explained this by a sharp appreciation of the Russian ruble against the Tajik national currency, the somoni, and the fact that customers of some banks cashed out at ATMs of other banks.
