A working delegation of the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) visited Tajikistan last week.

The Saudi Arabia Embassy in Dushanbe says the main purpose of the visit for the delegation was to get acquainted with the progress of implementation of the SFD-funded projects in the country.

The delegation member reportedly met with representatives of agencies implementing the projects.

SFD is currently participating in implementation of three projects in Tajikistan aimed at enhancing the country’s education, transportation and irrigation sectors: 1) rehabilitation of the road connecting Kulob and Qalaikhumb, the administrative center of Darvoz district in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) – sections “A” and “F”; 2) construction of a number of secondary schools in Tajikistan; and 3) development of drinking and domestic water supply system in Khatlon province.

The Kulob-Qalaikhumb road rehabilitation project is scheduled to be completed in September this year.

Under the project to support enhancement of education project in Tajikistan, Saudi Arabia has pledged to fund to build dozens of schools in Tajikistan.  To-date, construction of 34 schools has reportedly been completed.  The project is scheduled to be completed before the end of this year.

The third project aimed at developing the drinking and domestic water supply system in Khatlon province is still under the consideration and it expected to be launched next year.

According to the Saudi Arabia Embassy in Dushanbe, a total number of SFD-funded projects in Tajikistan is eleven in a total amount of about 174 million U.S. dollars.

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) is a Saudi Arabian government agency that provides development assistance to developing countries by financing social and infrastructure projects with the aim of improving lives and communities, which leads to supporting the economies of recipient countries by enhancing growth and job opportunities.  SFD was established in 1974 and began operations in 1975.  SFD's activities include development, finance, trade and funding.
