Tajikistan has sent 55 tons of humanitarian aid to the earthquake-hit areas of Syria, according to the emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan.

The assistance reportedly includes rice, sugar, drinking water, vegetable oil and other basic food products.

The assistance also includes warm clothes, antiseptics and medical face masks, Ms. Umeda Yusufi, a spokeswoman for the Emergencies Committee, said.

Some media reports say Syria has reported more than 5,800 deaths, a toll that has not changed for days.

Wikipedia, however, reports that over 6,400 deaths have been confirmed in Syria as of February 19, 2023.

In Syria, up to 5 million people may be homeless, many already internally displaced after fleeing civil war.

Meanwhile, a shallow magnitude 6.4 earthquake reportedly jolted the Turkiye-Syria border region yesterday, killing at least three people, two weeks after the area was devastated by quakes that killed tens of thousands of people.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre says Monday’s aftershock was centered in Turkiye’s southernmost province of Hatay at a depth of 2 kilometers.
