How does the current pension increase announced in Tajikistan differ from the last year’s one?

In a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, the deputy head of the Agency for Social Insurance and Pensions (Agency) under the Government of Tajikistan, Alamkhon Naimi, said the basic pension, which is equal to 250.00 somonis, last year was raised by 20 percent, while this year, the entire pension will be raised by 30 percent.  

Thus, if pensioner receives 500.00 somonis, then with a 30-percent increase his pension will be 650.00 somonis.  

Last year, an average monthly pension in Tajikistan is more than 375.00 somonis, which is 14.5 percent more than in 2022.

According to data of the Agency for Social Insurance and Pensions, current  average pension rates are 447.70 somonis for the retirement pension, 364.80 somonis for the insurance pension and 271.41 somonis for the social pension.  

As of January 1, 2024, a total number of pensioners living in Tajikistan is 796,089 people, which is 4.3 percent or 32,756 people more than in 2022.  

Mr. Naimi noted at the news conference  that last year, a total number of beneficiaries for social welfare allowance in Tajikistan was 223,350 people, 8.3 percent or 17,249 people more than in 2022.  

The Agency deputy head said that last year, 4.086 billion somonis (more than 372.8 million US dollars)  went to the budget of social insurance and pensions due to social tax, which is 14.5 percent or 550.6 million somonis (47.3 million US dollars) more than in 2022.  

Naimi further added that it is necessary to provide a set of measures this year to increase current retirement, insurance and social pensions by 30 percent  from July 1, 2024.  

In Tajikistan, the retirement age for men is 63, and for women is 58.
