The Republican Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery in Tajikistan has successfully performed bariatric surgeries on more than 100 patients suffering from obesity, says a statement released by Tajikistan’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Population (MoHSPP).

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is a surgical procedure that helps people with obesity lose weight and improve their health.  Bariatric surgery changes the digestive system to limit how much food a person can eat and absorb. This can be done by making the stomach smaller, or by changing the stomach and small intestine to reduce the amount of nutrients and calories absorbed

The surgeries were reportedly conducted using laparoscopic techniques, allowing procedures to be done without large abdominal incisions—a significant advancement for the country’s surgical field, the ministry noted.

The Center's surgeons, Fathullo Boqiyev and Behrouz Hakimzoda, have received retraining in foreign clinics and successfully performed these surgeries. According to the Center’s doctors, bariatric procedures involve interventions designed for patients with obesity and related complications.  During these surgeries, the size of digestive organs, including the stomach, is reduced, promoting weight loss and alleviating metabolic disorders.

Fathullo Boqiyev stated that postoperative results have been positive, with a low rate of complications that aligns with international standards.

In the future, specialists at the Republican Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery plan to continue performing bariatric surgeries and to develop rare surgical interventions typically done in foreign clinics.  Their primary goal is to reduce the number of patients seeking treatment abroad by offering the necessary care within Tajikistan.

Additionally, the Center continues to implement new technologies and treatment methods, significantly enhancing the quality of medical services and reducing costs for patients. Currently, the center offers a full range of bariatric surgeries that meet global standards, including sleeve gastrectomy and various types of gastric bypass.
