Telecommunications operators in Tajikistan have generated a total of about 2.528 billion somonis (over US$237 million) in revenue over the first nine months of this year (13.2-percent decrease compared to the same period last year), according to Communications Service under the Government of Tajikistan.

An official source within the communications service agency says revenues of private telecommunications operators, which account for 91.2% of the country’s telecom market, have amounted to 2.305 billion somonis (US$216 million).

Compared to the same period last year, their revenues have reportedly dropped by 17%.

Meanwhile, the revenues of the national operator Tojiktelecom, the state-run enterprise Pochtai Tochik (Tajik Post), and the structural divisions of the Communications Service have increased by 63.3% in nine months to September 30, 3034, reaching 223.4 million somonis.

As of October 1, the country reportedly had over 4.5 million internet users and nearly 7.2 million mobile subscribers, of whom about 5.4 million are considered active.

In the updated Speedtest Global Index rankings released in October, Tajikistan ranked 121st out of 158 countries in terms of fixed broadband internet speed.

Uzbekistan leads Central Asia in this metric, ranking 74th, followed by Kyrgyzstan at 82nd, Kazakhstan at 91st.  Turkmenistan ranked 158th.

There are four mobile phone companies operating in Tajikistan: Tcell; Babilon Mobile; Megaton Tajikistan; and Zet Mobile.
