In December 2024, Tajikistan exported electricity worth over US$6.4 million, marking an increase of nearly 53% compared to the previous month,  according to data from the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan.

Overall, the country exported electricity worth approximately US$113 million in 2024, a 2.4% increase compared to 2023.

Last year, electricity exports accounted for 5.8% of the country’s total exports.

According to Barqi Tojik, during the autumn-winter season, when Tajikistan itself faces energy supply challenges, electricity is supplied in minimal volumes only to Afghanistan to maintain the operation of power lines and other infrastructure.

The agreement with Uzbekistan, on the other hand, is limited exclusively to electricity supplies during the summer period.

Earlier, Afghanistan’s power utility company, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), announced that it had reached an agreement with Barqi Tojik to purchase electricity for the upcoming year, 2025.  However, no specific details of the agreement were provided.

Electricity exports from Tajikistan to Afghanistan are carried out under a general agreement signed in 2008, which remains in effect until 2028.  At the end of each calendar year, the parties sign an additional protocol to clarify the volume of electricity and pricing for the following year.

Meanwhile, rural residents of Tajikistan have been receiving limited electricity since September 21—3 hours in the morning and 5 hours in the evening.

According to statistical data, Tajikistan generated over 22.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2024, an increase of 2.6% compared to 2023.  About 93% of the electricity produced last year came from hydroelectric power plants.
