This year, Tajikistan has planted new orchards and vineyards on an area of 272 hectares, with 243 hectares allocated to orchards and 29 hectares to vineyards, according to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA).

An official source at a MoA says the restoration of old orchards and vineyards continues on an area of 2,064 hectares, of which 1,833 hectares are orchards and 232 hectares are vineyards.

At the end of 2024, the Program for the Development of Horticulture, Viticulture, and Citrus Cultivation for 2025-2029 was adopted.  This program aims to improve food security, develop agriculture, increase exports, create new jobs, and address environmental issues.

The program will be implemented in stages until 2029 with a total budget of 691 million somoni (over $63.5 million), funded by foreign investments, the private sector, and the government of Tajikistan, the source added.

According to the document, over the next five years, it is planned to create 2,740 hectares of orchards and 2,787 hectares of vineyards across the country.  The total area of orchards and vineyards on irrigated lands in Tajikistan will be 206,535 hectares.  The program also includes the restoration of 17.3 thousand hectares of old orchards and vineyards. In 2024, 438 hectares were allocated for citrus crops, and in the next five years, the area dedicated to them will increase by 113.5 hectares.

The Plan Actions for 2025-2027 under the Program includes activities such as introducing practices for regionalizing fruit tree plantations based on agro-climatic conditions, conducting awareness campaigns for farmers on methods of growing super-intensive orchards and citrus crops, increasing the planting of high-yielding varieties of trees and vineyards, constructing warehouses for winter grafting of seedlings, and others.

The financing volume for the Program in 2025-2027 will exceed 375 million somoni (over $34.5 million).
