Around three months ago, a more than 5-kilometer section of road was asphalted in Vahdat jamoat of Devashtich district in Sughd province with funds from migrant workers and local residents.  However, by now, part of this road has already been damaged.

Some drivers who regularly use this road told Asia-Plus news agency that they were pleased when the repair work started, hoping to get rid of the deteriorated road surface, but their joy was short-lived.

The head of the Devashtich district road department, Nabi Mamurov, said that he knew about the road repair initiated by local residents, but he was unaware of its current state.

"I have no information about the damage to the new road, as it was fully asphalted with funds from the residents, and they chose the road company themselves.  We have not received any verbal or written complaints," Nabi Mamurov said.

However, Ghairat Kholov, the former chairman of the Vahdat jamoat, under whose leadership the road was asphalted, told Asia-Plus in a phone conversation that the rapid damage to the road was not due to its low quality but rather the onset of cold weather.

"The roadwork continued until mid-November. The company that was repairing the road committed to restoring it, so there are no problems.  The impatience of the investors led to hasty actions by the road workers and responsible parties – the road was built just before the start of winter.  In fact, those who did not contribute to its construction are the ones complaining about the damage," he said.

Throughout 2024, 45 kilometers of roads were asphalted and improved in the Devashtich district, of which 5 kilometers were funded by the district's budget, and the remaining 40 kilometers by the residents, including migrant workers.
