Nearly a month after his appointment, the identity of the new chief of the Interior Ministry Main Traffic Police Directorate has become known.

The position is now held by 38-year-old Colonel Mirali Abdurahmonzoda, about whom little information was publicly available until recently.

His appointment decree was signed on April 22, 2025.  He replaced Rustam Mirzomurodzoda, who had served as the traffic police chief since July 12, 2023.

Attempts by Asia-Plus to obtain comments and details about the new chief from the traffic police press service were unsuccessful — officials declined to provide information, citing lack of time.

Under the previous leadership of Rustam Mirzomurodzoda, interaction with journalists was minimal, and the department had little cooperation with the media.  There is hope that the new leadership will bring greater openness and dialogue with the public.

Experience and education

According to the traffic police’s official Facebook page, Mirali Abdurakhmonzoda is an experienced law enforcement officer who has served in various units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs since 2006.

Over the years, he has risen from an operative to leadership roles in criminal police and the citizen registration service.

He graduated from the Tajik Ministry of Internal Affairs Academy, the Russian-Tajik Slavic University, the National University of Tajikistan, and the Management Faculty of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Academy.  For his professionalism and work achievements, he has been awarded departmental medals and certificates of honor.

Key challenges ahead

The new traffic police chief faces a critical task — reducing the rising rate of traffic accidents and fatal crashes, which have become an increasingly urgent issue in the country.

According to the Interior Ministry, 174 serious traffic violations resulting in grave consequences were recorded over the first four months of 2025 — 24 more than the same period last year.

In 2024, Tajikistan saw 1,233 traffic accidents, up by 122 from 1,111 cases in 2023.  These accidents resulted in 552 deaths and 1,353 injuries.
