Iran's Ambassador to Tajikistan, Alireza Haghighiyan, expressed gratitude to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states and other nations that condemned recent Israeli airstrikes on Iranian territory.

Speaking at the international conference titled “Central Asia — The Core of the SCO: 25 Years of Cooperation for Shared Development”, which was held in Dushanbe, Haghighiyan described the strikes as a violation of international law, calling for a firm and coordinated international response.

“Iran appreciates Tajikistan, the SCO countries, and other nations that have condemned the aggressive actions of the Israeli regime.  More than ever, decisive measures are needed to counter unilateral and destabilizing moves in the region,” he stated.

Iran reaffirms commitment to the SCO

Haghighiyan emphasized that Iran intends to remain an active participant in SCO affairs, particularly in areas such as counter-terrorism, regional stability, energy security, and sustainable development.

He also noted the strategic role Central Asia could play as a new hub of peace and cooperation, with the SCO positioned to uphold international law and support oppressed nations.

“Multilateral cooperation remains a rational path toward achieving peace, security, and stability,” the ambassador said, expressing hope that aggression in the region would end, paving the way for justice and a lasting order.

Background: escalating conflict between Israel and Iran

The ambassador’s remarks come amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.  On June 13, Israel launched a military operation targeting Iranian positions.  Iran responded with retaliatory strikes. Both sides have reported casualties and infrastructure damage, with the conflict still ongoing.

On June 14, the SCO Secretariat issued a statement expressing concern over the escalating violence in the Middle East.  The document condemned Israel’s strikes as violations of international law and the UN Charter, and SCO member states extended condolences to the Iranian people and government.
