After years of public frustration over slow speeds and high prices, Tajikistan’s internet sector may finally be showing signs of improvement.  Promises made earlier this year by the new Head of the Communications Service under the Government of Tajikistan, Isfandiyor Sadullo, appear to be translating into tangible changes.

Lower prices, higher speeds: a promising start

At a March press conference, Sadullo vowed to reduce the cost of both mobile and fixed internet services while increasing speeds. Just weeks later, in late April, authorities announced the first round of price cuts.  According to the communications service agency, mobile data packages were expanded by at least 20%, while fixed internet tariffs dropped by an average of 55%.  Plans offering speeds below 5 Mbps were eliminated altogether.

Asia-Plus reached out to Tajikistan’s major telecom operators — Zet-Mobile, Tcell, Babilon-Mobile, and MegaFon Tajikistan — to assess what’s actually changed for consumers.

Zet-Mobile: more data, but only for new users

While base prices remain unchanged, Zet-Mobile has expanded the data included in its “Super Power” tariff line by 20–50%, with additional nighttime packages ranging from 100 to 300 GB.

For example, “Super Mini” (39 somonis/month) now offers 15 GB of main data (up from 10 GB) + 100 GB at night, “Super Ultra” (99 somonis/month): now includes 90 GB of main data (up from 50 GB) + 300 GB at night.

However, these benefits are only available to new subscribers.

Tcell: bigger bundles and price drops

Tcell increased data volumes in two of its plans by 20%: “Salom+ 130” now includes 50 GB for messengers and 20 GB for other platforms, while “Salom+ 180”: now offers 75 GB and 30 GB respectively.

In addition, the “Salom+ 300” plan saw a price cut from 300 somonis to 240 somonis, with the same data volume.

Babilon-Mobile: doubling down

Babilon-Mobile doubled the data in its youth-oriented plans: “Javoni 2” from 50 GB to 100 GB; and  “Javoni 3” from 100 GB to 200 GB.

The operator attributed the upgrade to reduced costs for imported bandwidth from international providers.

MegaFon Tajikistan: perks for new customers

MegaFon has also upped data volumes, especially in its “Biyo! Bisoz Life” plan: for 64.43 somonis data rose from 20 GB to 24 GB.

New users get a bonus of 10 GB/month for six months.  For plans above 100 somonis: data volumes double for the first six months.  As with Zet-Mobile, these improvements are limited to new subscribers.

Home Internet: faster and cheaper

Babilon-T — The company boosted speeds on all its Cyber plans by 2 to 2.5 times: “Cyber S” (120 somonis) now offers 12 Mbps for social media and 5 Mbps for other sites (up from 10 Mbps and 2 Mbps); and “Cyber XXL” (560 somonis) now provides 64 Mbps for social platforms and 32 Mbps for general browsing (up from 20 Mbps and 15 Mbps).

NETS – the company reduced prices by up to 40% and increased speeds across its entire tariff range.  All plans below 5 Mbps were discontinued.  “Tamosho +5” now 6 Mbps, price dropped from 125 to 100 somonis; “Tamosho +30” now 32 Mbps, price reduced from 375 to 300 somonis.  These changes took effect on March 21.

Looking ahead

While many of the most attractive internet improvements currently benefit only new users, the reforms signal a positive shift in Tajikistan’s digital policy.  Observers hope the trend continues — expanding benefits to all customers and advancing the country’s broader digital transformation goals.
