Tajikistan presented its first-ever national Green Energy Roadmap at the 3rd International Conference on the “Prospects for the Development of Renewable Energy in the Republic of Tajikistan,” held in Dushanbe from June 23-25.

The roadmap, developed jointly by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan (MoEWR) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), outlines strategic pathways for achieving the 7th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 7) — ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

A milestone strategy for a green future

According to the Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan Manouchehr Safarzoda, the document marks a major step toward strengthening national energy security and accelerating the transition to a green economy.

“This strategy is tailored to Tajikistan’s unique climate, technological infrastructure, and social needs,” said Safarzoda during the conference. “It will serve as a foundation for long-term sustainable development.”

The roadmap focuses on three main pillars:

  1. Improving energy efficiency, especially in residential housing;
  2. Modernizing outdated heating and cooking systems, replacing them with modern, predominantly electric alternatives;
  3. Expanding renewable energy sources, including hydropower, solar, wind, and bioenergy — all with the long-term goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Unlocking Tajikistan’s renewable potential

Currently, Tajikistan ranks 6th globally in terms of the percentage of electricity generated from renewable energy sources.  Specifically, Tajikistan gets 98% of its electricity from hydropower, which is a renewable energy source.  However, the country has only tapped into 5% of its hydropower potential, which is estimated at 527 billion kWh per year.  This leaves substantial room for growth in the renewable sector.

In addition to hydropower, experts highlighted the country’s significant solar potential of 369,600 MW and wind potential of 4,485 MW, offering new frontiers for green energy investment and development.

Conference brings together key stakeholders

The three-day event was organized by the Ministry of Energy with support from the Renewable Energy Association of Tajikistan and international partners.  It brought together government officials, scientists, civil society representatives, and international organizations to discuss policy, technology, and investment strategies for expanding the use of renewables across the country.
