Kyrgyzstan has outpaced its Central Asian neighbors in per capita GDP growth over the past three years, Gazeta.uz reports, citing economist Mirkamil Kholboyev, a graduate of South Korea’s Chonbuk National University. From 2022 to 2024, the country’s per capita GDP reportedly surged by 85%, reaching US$2,500.
In comparison, during the same period, Tajikistan saw a 50.5% increase in per capita GDP (in U.S. dollars), Kazakhstan 42%, and Uzbekistan 37%.
Kholboyev notes that Kyrgyzstan has become one of the fastest-growing economies in the world by this metric.
“Recent regional tensions have unexpectedly created favorable conditions for Kyrgyzstan, allowing it to achieve the region’s highest economic growth rate—9% annually,” he explained.
According to official data, Tajikistan's GDP grew at an average annual rate of 8.2% from 2022 to 2024, with growth recorded at 8.0% in 2022, 8.3% in 2023, and 8.4% in 2024. Over this period, the country’s total GDP reportedly rose from 98.9 billion somonis (around US$8.8 billion) in 2021 to 153.4 billion somonis (approximately US$14 billion) in 2024.
Tajikistan's population also grew from 9.93 million in January 2022 to 10.5 million by January 2025. Consequently, GDP per capita increased from 9,900 somonis (US$886) in 2021 to 15,400 somoni (US$1,333) in 2024—a 55.5% rise in the national currency and 50.5% in the U.S. dollars.
