The Agency for State Financial Control and Combating Corruption under the President of Tajikistan Agency has completed its investigation into the case of T.M. Nazrizoda, the former chief of office of the head of Jaihoun district in Khatlon province, who now faces fraud charges.

According to the agency, Nazrizoda held his position from December 19, 2019 to February 9, 2024, and committed the alleged offense during his tenure.  He has been charged under Article 247 of Tajikistan’s Penal Code – fraud.

In June 2023, Nazrizoda allegedly deceived a local entrepreneur (identified as A.R.M.), convincing him to hand over 245,000 somonis (about US$22,400) under false pretenses.  He claimed the payment was needed to obtain approval from the local police department and to create "obstacles" to the replacement of aging water pipes in the village of Sari Pul, located in Panj jamoat community of Jaihoun.

Instead of using the funds as promised, Nazrizoda embezzled the money for personal use, the agency reports.

Following the launch of criminal proceedings, the former official repaid the full amount of the stolen funds.  However, the case has moved to a court for prosecution.
