For pilgrims, nature lovers, and hikers.

Tajikistan is a true treasure trove for travelers: from ancient fortresses to thermal springs, from untouched nature to popular climbing routes. Even those who were born and raised here have much to be amazed by – the country hides unique tourist locations in its mountains and valleys.

And who knows the tourist gems of Tajikistan better than the Committee for Tourism Development? We asked them the question: which 5 tourist spots in our country should be visited at least once in a lifetime?

Historical and Cultural Heritage: Khujand Fortress

The city of Khujand is not just the center of the Sughd region, but also one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, and its heart is undoubtedly the Khujand Fortress.

Historians are confident that its roots go back to the era of Alexander the Great. Today’s reconstruction harmoniously combines a museum, an observation deck, and cozy inner courtyards where artisans’ workshops are located.

It’s a great place to touch centuries-old history and see a panorama of the city from above.

Ecotourism: Lake Timurdara

Around Lake Timurdara is silence, fresh air, rare Red Book plants, and true wilderness. This destination is an ideal choice for eco-tourists and anyone seeking solitude away from the urban hustle and bustle.

Moreover, it can be reached in just 1–1.5 hours by car, making this location accessible for day trips.

Lake Timurdara is located in a picturesque gorge in the northern Shakhrinav district, approximately an hour’s walk from the Karatag River, at an altitude of 1980 meters above sea level.

Mountaineering: Artuch Camp

The Artuch mountaineering camp in the Fann Mountains is a pilgrimage site for all who are in love with mountains. It is located in the Penjikent city of the Sughd region. The camp is surrounded by majestic peaks, glacial lakes, and steep trails.

Both novice and professional climbers come here. It is also one of the most photogenic places in the country — every morning begins with incredible colors of dawn over the mountain peaks.

It was after visiting these places, according to climbers’ memories, that Russian actor, journalist, writer, and bard Yuri Vizbor composed his famous song “I Left My Heart in the Fann Mountains.”

Hiking: Sari-Khosor Reserve

Walking through the trails of Sari-Khosor, you feel like you’re in the settings of an adventure movie. Birds sing overhead, a waterfall roars nearby, and in the distance, majestic mountains covered with forests.

For those who love hiking, camping, and unforgettable views, Sari-Khosor will be a true discovery. And although the journey here is not easy (almost 200 km from Dushanbe, part of which is off-road), the reward for the effort will be generous: you will see Tajikistan in all its splendor.

This nature reserve is located in the southern part of the country — in the Baljuvon district of the Khatlon region, about 40 km from the district center.

Wellness Tourism: Bibi Fotimai Zahro Thermal Spring

Deep in the heart of the Pamirs, in the Ishkashim district of GBAO, lies the extraordinary Bibi Fotimai Zahro hot spring. There are various legends about its origin, but all are connected with the daughter of the prophet Muhammad, after whom the spring was named.

According to one of them, this place was once desert and lifeless. A woman walked across it with an infant in her arms — the child cried loudly from thirst, and there was not a single water source around. Seeing their suffering, Bibi Fatima struck the ground with her staff — and a spring burst forth. Since then, this place became alive, full of water, hope, and healing.

The water temperature here reaches +50 °C, and it is rich in natural minerals, especially beneficial for women’s health: potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and others.

These locations are just a small part of Tajikistan’s rich tourist heritage. However, according to experts from the Committee for Tourism Development, they are worthy of being included in the TOP-5 best attractions of the country. It’s time to discover Tajikistan anew — and fall in love with it again!
