DUSHANBE, September 25, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Tajikistan has produced more than 80 tons fishes this year, which is 10 percent more than it was originally planned and much more than the 2007 level, according to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA).

The source at a MoA said that good results had been yielded despite the fact that the large number of fishes and hatchlings had perished during the past difficult winter.

According to him, the ministry established the sate unitary enterprise Mohii Tojikiston (Tajikistan’s Fish Breeding).  “Besides this enterprise, another 18 fish farms currently operate in the country,” said the source. “10 of those 18 farms are the private ones.”

To develop the fishery sector in the country, the government has adopted a special fishery development program designed for 2009-2015.  The program provides for increase of a total area of fish-breeding reservoirs from 3,000 to 15,000 hectares and production capacities up to more than 3,500 tons of fishes.

The MoA will give a press conference on the fishery and poultry development issues in Dushanbe tomorrow.
