DUSHANBE, October 29, 2013, Asia-Plus — The southern Khatlon province has fulfilled its cotton target.
“By October 28, cotton growers in Khatlon have yielded 270,000 tons of raw cotton, which is 100 percent of their target,” an official source at the crop sector department, the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) told Asia-Plus in an interview.
Meanwhile, cotton growers in the northern Sughd province have yielded more than 100,000 tons of raw cotton (90 percent of their target) and cotton-producing districts subordinate to the center have yielded 10,200 tons of raw cotton (43 percent of their target).
The republic has yielded more than 380,000 tons of raw cotton by October 28, which comprises some 94 percent of this year”s target, the source said.
Cotton is most used fiber of the world. The demand for cotton is increased day by day. To fulfill the demand of raw cotton fiber different cotton producing countries are trying their best.
In Tajikistan, cotton makes an important contribution to both the agricultural sector and the national economy. Cotton accounts for 60 percent of agricultural output, supports 75 percent of the rural population, and uses 45 percent of irrigated arable land. At the national level, it is an important source of both export earnings and tax revenue.
