DUSHANBE, August 28, 2008, Asia-Plus — Over the past seven years, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has promoted improvement of the political, security and development situation in the region, Chinese President Hu Jintao said at a plenary session of the SCO summit in Dushanbe on August 28.
According to him, a lot has been done in the fields of institutional construction and practical cooperation between the SCO states since the previous summit that was held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
“The member nations are providing support to each other in many cases, when it concerns independence, sovereignty, security, and other vitally important national interests,” said President Hu, “All this convinces us of the necessity of strengthening the unity of Organization.”
On the present international situation, the Chinese leader noted that the world is still far from calmness. “New seats of tensions are emerging, increasing imbalance in the world economy, traditional and untraditional factors of threats are being inextricably intertwined, and uncertainty and instability in the world policy and economy are being aggravated,” Mr. Hu said.
“Solution of problems in our region depends on consultations between the countries of the region themselves,” he said, adding that it is easier to overcome threats and challenges facing the countries of the region through more intensive regional cooperation.
In this connection, the Chinese leader noted that the SCO countries should unite more and take joint efforts address various modern challenges.
