Tajik Parliament expected to consider Tajikistan-ADB grant agreement tomorrow

Date:

DUSHANBE, December 24, 2013, Asia-Plus — The issue of ratification of a grant agreement between Tajikistan and the Asian Development Bank on improving road connectivity in Tajikistan will be discussed at the next sitting of the fifth session of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) of the fourth convocation that will take place here on December 25.

Member of the Majlisi Namoyandagon Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs, Ismoil Talbakov, is sure that the agreement will be ratified without any problems.

“This agreement actually provides the first financial support of international financial institutions for reconstruction of the rural road,” Tajik MP stressed.

We will recall that ADB approved a $70 million grant for the project to magnify regional economic cooperation and inclusive growth in Tajikistan by improving key roads, enhancing road safety and maintenance, and promoting local community development last September.

The project provides for rehabilitating and improving road safety and maintenance on approximately 88 kilometers of the Sayron-Karamyk road section of CAREC Corridors 3 and 5, and 87 kilometers of the subnetwork Vose-Khovaling road.  The project will also improve about 30 kilometers of village feeder roads in Vose and Khovaling districts, construct roadside rest areas for male and female vendors and travelers, and pilot solar energy installations for villages with winter electricity deficiencies. Training on women’s entrepreneurship and the maintenance of solar power facilities, as well as public campaigns for community road safety awareness will also be provided.
