DUSHANBE, August 20, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Tajik light heavyweight (-81kg) boxer Jahon Qurbonov has been disqualified in the third round of his bout in the quarterfinal of Beijing Olympic boxing tournament. 

The fight between Jahon Qurbonov and Kazakhstan”s Yerkebulan Shynaliyev for a place in the semifinals was held on August 19. 

Neither of the two boxers had a lucky draw, but both have done exceptionally well, especially Qurbonov, who thumped the reigning world champion, Uzbekistan”s Abbos Atoyev 11-3, before posting another convincing 8-1 victory over Croatia”s Marijo Sivolija-Jelica.

Shynaliyev defeated Daugirdas Semiotas of Lithuania 11-3 in the first round and then defeated Carlos Negron Colon of Puerto Rico 9-3 in the second.

Jahon Qurbonov’s bout with Kazakhstan’s Yerkebulan Shynaliyev was stopped with 17 seconds left in the third round, Narzullo Latifov, president of the Association of Sports reporters of Tajikistan told Asia-Plus by phone from Beijing.  Kazakh boxer led 12-6 at the time.  Qurbonov had been warned multiple times for shoving and holding his opponent.

Another our boxer, a 21-year-old Tajik boxer Anvar Yunusov, participating in the flyweight division (-51kh) will fight Thailand’s Somjit Jongiohor for a place in semifinal today.  

We will recall that Anvar Yunusov secured his place in the quarterfinal on August 15, by defeating Robernilson Vieira of Brazil 12-6, while the 33-year-old Jongiohor beat Samir Mammadov of Azerbaijan 10-2 in the bout for a place in quarterfinal.

According to an official website of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Thai veteran said before the tournament that Beijing 2008 would be his last boxing contest.
