DUSHANBE, August 19, 2008, Asia-Plus — Chairman of the Social-Democratic Party (SDPT), Rahmatillo Zoirov, yesterday met with students participating at a Civic Education Summer Camp in Qairoqqum, Sughd province.
Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, Mr. Zoirov said at the invitation of the OSCE Office in Tajikistan he had met with 150 students from all universities of the country that have been participating in the summer camp organized by the OSCE Office in Tajikistan. According to him, they have discussed issues related to political and legal realities in the country as well as the country’s domestic and foreign policies.
We will recall that to help young people develop leadership and critical thinking skills the OSCE Office in Tajikistan has organized the Civic Education Summer Camp in Qairoqqum. The 15-day camp that started on August 6 has brought together some 150 participants from across the country to learn about good governance, democracy, civil society, political participation and elections.
This is the ninth Civic Education Summer Camp supported by the OSCE Office through its Field Office in Khujand. The camp has been implemented in cooperation with different organizations, including this year”s partner Youth and Society, a local non-governmental organization that seeks to inspire students to value democracy, legal awareness and civil society.
The SDPT leader also noted that today, he is acting as moderator at a roundtable meeting, entitled “Strategy of Socio-economic Development of the Problem Region,” in Khujand. The meeting is staged by the Swiss Cooperation Office (SDC) and the Center for Education and Socioeconomic Development.
Tomorrow, a conference of the SDPT organization for Sughd will be held in Khujand to discuss a number of within-the-party issues as well as the strategy of participation of the party in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
On August 21 and 22, Zoirov will attend the SDPT district conferences in Konibodoma and Istaravshan.
